“Crisp rhythms and tuneful vocals are blanketed in swirling dervishes of atmospheric shimmer. The songs are focused, melodic, and retain the listener's interest. ”
"Having given this album a listen, there is no doubt that the only direction for The New Haunts now is up. If a storm could be caught and produced into a musical record, this album would be it."
"Each song comes performed from a place in the heart, and the band’s ability to work off of each other’s musical tendencies make The New Haunts a welcomed addition to the Edmonton music scene."
"Writing on the Wall is even friendlier with its quiet-loud-quiet structure and layers of vocals and shimmery guitars which together produce that perfect emotive vibe that makes ears tune in and listen."
The New Haunts: Old Pals Become New Band
The New Haunts are a progressive indie rock band based out of Edmonton, Alberta. The theatrically arranged electric four-piece is pursuing shows across Alberta and Western Canada to promote their new self-titled album, released Fall 2017. While loud, the band’s arrangements are best suited for listening venues alongside acts of the math-rock, progressive, indie, and experimental genres. Formed from collegiate-trained musicians, every show is a unique performance, informed by each member’s professional accomplishments (with some members having played professionally for over a decade) and the social dynamics within the band. The band is expanding their listenership through radio play on stations such as CKUA, social media, editorial coverage, and live performances.
The project began when former coworkers Rory Brown and Aaron Sabourin met by chance in an Edmonton guitar store. Rory had an opportunity to go into the studio and they decided to collaborate on a record. Bruce Pelland joined on bass before beginning work in the studio. After completing the album at Sound Extractor Studios with Stew Kirkwood producing, engineering, and drumming on the record they brought Bill George on as drummer for live shows and future projects.
The current line up has been perfecting their live show as well as continued creative work for follow up releases since 2015 and are just beginning to hit their stride. As Oskar Zybart from CKUA radio said "Their's remains one of the best live performances I've seen this year and shows great promise of better things to come."
